9/4/2023 0 Comments Cassette voice recorder![]() In 1932, after six years of developmental work, including a patent application in 1931, Merle Duston, a Detroit radio engineer, created a tape recorder capable of recording both sounds and voice that used a low-cost chemically treated paper tape. In 1912, a similar process was used for the Hiller talking clock. The patent description states that the machine could store six records on the same strip of film, side by side, and it was possible to switch between them. The celluloid film was inscribed and played back with a stylus, in a manner similar to the wax cylinders of Edison's gramophone. He received the patent for his invention in 1909. Goodale adapted movie film for analog audio recording. Goodale is exhibited in the private Phonograph Museum in Mariazell, Austria.įranklin C. The waxed tape recording medium was inferior to Edison's wax cylinder medium, and Edison's wax cylinder phonograph became the first widespread sound recording technology, used for both entertainment and office dictation. Otherwise, with some reconditioning, they could be placed into working condition. The machine's playback head was also missing. The tapes and machine created by Bell's associates, examined at one of the Smithsonian Institution's museums, became brittle, and the heavy paper reels warped. While the machine was never developed commercially, it somewhat resembled the modern magnetic tape recorder in its design. Both recording and playback styluses, mounted alternately on the same two posts, could be adjusted vertically so that several recordings could be cut on the same 3⁄ 16-inch-wide (4.8 mm) strip. In playback mode, a dull, loosely mounted stylus, attached to a rubber diaphragm, carried the reproduced sounds through an ear tube to its listener. ![]() The sharp recording stylus, actuated by a vibrating mica diaphragm, cut the wax from the strip. The tape was then taken up on the other reel. The wax strip passed from one eight-inch reel around the periphery of a pulley (with guide flanges) mounted above the V-pulleys on the main vertical shaft, where it came in contact with either its recording or playback stylus. The machine was of sturdy wood and metal construction, and hand-powered by means of a knob fastened to a flywheel. It employed a 3⁄ 16-inch-wide (4.8 mm) strip of wax-covered paper that was coated by dipping it in a solution of beeswax and paraffin and then had one side scraped clean, with the other side allowed to harden. The earliest known audio tape recorder was a non-magnetic, non-electric version invented by Alexander Graham Bell's Volta Laboratory and patented in 1886 ( U.S. As of the first decade of the 21st century, analog magnetic tape has been largely replaced by digital recording technologies. ![]() Since some early refinements improved the fidelity of the reproduced sound, magnetic tape has been the highest quality analog recording medium available. The alternative recording technologies of the era, transcription discs and wire recorders, could not provide anywhere near this level of quality and functionality. It gave artists and producers the power to record and re-record audio with minimal loss in quality as well as edit and rearrange recordings with ease. Magnetic tape revolutionized both the radio broadcast and music recording industries. This German invention was the start of a long string of innovations that have led to present-day magnetic tape recordings. Prior to the development of magnetic tape, magnetic wire recorders had successfully demonstrated the concept of magnetic recording, but they never offered audio quality comparable to the other recording and broadcast standards of the time. The use of magnetic tape for sound recording originated around 1930 in Germany as paper tape with oxide lacquered to it. Tape-recording devices include the reel-to-reel tape deck and the cassette deck, which uses a cassette for storage. In its present-day form, it records a fluctuating signal by moving the tape across a tape head that polarizes the magnetic domains in the tape in proportion to the audio signal. 1978Īn audio tape recorder, also known as a tape deck, tape player or tape machine or simply a tape recorder, is a sound recording and reproduction device that records and plays back sounds usually using magnetic tape for storage. What’s not so good about Affinity PublisherĪ few nifty features that we use happily in InDesign seem to be missing at the moment from Publisher, or they work so differently that you’ll need to relearn them. PDFs are generated pretty much the same way as in InDesign, with professional results, as far as I can tell. First watch the tutorial, and then it works like a charm. You can find, add, or delete entries right inside the panel either before or after you’ve added the index on the page. This feature works very well and includes a handy panel on the left that shows all your entries. ![]() This is equivalent to InDesign’s Book feature and purports to work more or less the same way. This is where you add changing running heads (text variables) and is very clever indeed. It is well worth your while to learn to use the Section Manager. The procedure requires a little extra clicking around, but there’s a tutorial for that. These work almost the same as in InDesign and are very easy to figure out. When you highlight some copy and you want to change the typeface, move your mouse up and down your list of fonts and the highlighted copy changes to each one you roll over. You’ll need to purchase your own fonts no more leasing from Adobe. Yes, they’re included and work as you’d expect. Use Affinity Publisher Help if you get confused. You’ll find lots of styles already listed and defined for you, but you can change them in every way and add your own. There are character, paragraph, and object styles (see right) with all the familiar attributes. The Object Styles panel in Publisher looks nothing like the one in InDesign. Does this look like something you’ve seen before? If you have any experience with InDesign, you’ll notice right away the Context tool bar (Control panel) at the top and flyout panels on the right, a Pages panel on the left, and several other familiar-looking features. (However, if the fonts had been leased from Adobe, they would probably not have imported.) idml file in Publisher, it appeared so beautifully and so close to perfectly that I actually jumped out of my seat and started dancing around. Okay, call me crazy, but when I opened an InDesign. Here’s a list of some of the more important features and actions that you’ll encounter: I’d very much like to get my hands on a printed manual for Publisher, but it’s not available yet.Īlso-and this is very important-if you install all three applications, you’ll be able to work on your photos and illustrations without switching out to the other programs, as they are all so fully integrated that they are simply called “personas.” Hidden characters are easily accessible but are called Special Characters.īe aware that there are dozens of helpful tutorial videos for Publisher (more are being added), plus many others for Photo and Designer. If you use a Library in InDesign, instead you’ll find a very convenient Assets panel. For instance, the Control panel is called the Context tool bar. But you’ll have to search a bit on the screen at first, and learn a few new terms. The best thing about Publisher is that you’ll be able to accomplish almost anything you’re used to doing in InDesign. Affinity Photo is the equivalent of Adobe Photoshop, and you can open and edit. Affinity Designer is the equivalent of Adobe Illustrator, and you can open and edit. ![]() Just so we’re clear what we’re talking about here: Affinity Publisher is the equivalent of Adobe InDesign, and you can open and edit. I purposely have not read any other reviews of Publisher these observations are my own. So here you’ll get the straight scoop on what’s good, what’s not so good, and what’s absolutely terrific about Affinity Publisher-from the point of view of a book designer and as it relates to Book Design Made Simple. Are you considering trying the new #bookdesign software called Affinity Publisher? We've reviewed it for you and offer a few tips to get you started quickly. My method in trying out Affinity Publisher was to go through Book Design Made Simple and see whether I could accomplish all the book design and typesetting tasks we give you in the book.Īnd does Publisher have any extra features that might be useful to a book designer? Yes, definitely. Photo and Designer can also now be used on iPads, so check back on Publisher to see when the iPad version becomes available. The Affinity Publisher app is for desktop use on PCs and Macs. We both bought the Affinity software for desktop, and I must say that for the most part, we love it. ![]() a one-time total of $150 for the full line of Serif’s products: Publisher, Photo, and Designer (all at half price until May 20). Kitty landed solid and has only been maturing over the years. Kitty is a solid, stable, gpu-backed terminal emulator that feels far more polished than Alacritty (although the rendering in Alacritty has improved slightly). The default application for the Mac is Terminal, which is decent but iTerm2 adds auto selection during double-click (handy for copying a hostname) and more options to customize your console. Not even a primary macOS user but, nope, sorry, zzz. New versions of Alacritty don't even pass gatekeeper and the maintainers disparage macOS users as idiots who wasted money on Apple hardware (it's in one of the linked issues). I thought I'd give Alacritty a try again and I run into crap like this: alacritty/alacritty#4673. What's the point of fast if the screen doesn't render accurately? Alacritty had numerous text rendering issues (overlapped characters, incorrect font weights, doesn't respect system DPI scaling settings, flashing lines, you name it). When kitty launched it was a stable, feature complete terminal emulator. Maybe that is why I've yet to run into any problems with it.Įvery time I spin up kitty and Alacritty side-by-side, kitty has prevailed. ![]() I don't even use many of kitty's features, like multiple windows or tabs. So for anyone else that's on the fence and happens to like tinkering with keyboard layouts on macOS: kitty is your go-to terminal emulator! Again, on a Linux system this is not as noticeable, but on macOS I have to choose way lighter font variants in alacritty. The font rendering seems to be so much better in kitty.kitty has no such problems on any system that I've tried it on. But alacritty has one big flaw (there's a huge issue open for it, but nothing really going on): it does not work correctly when using an alternative (manually created) keyboard layout on macOS there's something wrong with the underlying library that manages the input, because it seems to react to the correct scancode, but not keycode. On paper, both kitty and alacritty would be good candidates. Ideally, I'd like to use the "same" terminal emulator on both system, with as few differences in configuration as possible. I use macOS at work and NixOS or some other GNU/Linux variant at home.I have a couple of points to add that I haven't seen yet: 9/3/2023 0 Comments Altiverb 7Altiverb also supports the new AAX format for Pro Tools 11 and up. Canned soups: 1 can of soup can contain 1700 mg of sodium! That’s more than the recommended 1500 mg per day for most people. Lower Sodium Swap: build your sandwich using leftover cooked proteins from dinner (such as roasted chicken breast, salmon etc.) instead of cured meats, low sodium canned salmon or tuna, and lots of veggies like lettuce, tomato, and avocado.Ĥ. Cold cuts & Cured deli meats: Just 6 thin slices of deli meat can contain up to 800 mg of sodium! You don’t need a large amount of processed food to quickly use up your recommended daily sodium limit. Lower Sodium Swap: choose low sodium toppings like veggies, ask for half the usual amount of cheese, and skip the salty toppings like processed meats, feta cheese, olives, and anchovies, or try preparing your own homemade pizza dough with less salt and fresh veggies as toppings.ģ. Pizza: One slice of pepperoni pizza can easily provide upwards of 700 mg of sodium! This comes from the cheese, pizza dough, pepperoni slices, pizza sauce, and other salty toppings. Lower Sodium Swap: skip the roll at dinner, look for lower sodium (less than 120 mg sodium per slice) or no salt added breads and be mindful of how many slices you have each day.Ģ. ![]() Breads & Rolls: I think the one that surprises most people is the sodium content of breads and dinner rolls! These can contain up to 230 mg of sodium per slice, and are often eaten throughout the day by most people (think a slice of bread at breakfast, sandwich at lunch, then dinner rolls). The Salty Six is a list of the top foods that contribute the most sodium to the North American diet.ġ. The “Salty Six” – top six hidden food sources of sodium + Easy lower sodium swaps So even if you don’t have high blood pressure, it’s recommended to limit the amount of sodium in your diet. Other negative health risks associated with too much sodium include osteoporosis and certain types of cancer. High blood pressure can increase your risk of developing heart disease (clogged/damaged arteries) and stroke. When you have too much sodium it can cause water to be drawn into your blood vessels, which puts extra stress on your artery walls and heart, and over time can cause blood vessels to stiffen and lead to high blood pressure (hypertension). Sodium is regulated by your kidneys and helps to maintain proper fluid balance in your body, and is involved in nerve and muscle function. Sodium is a mineral that is found in table salt (in the form of sodium chloride), naturally occurs in low amounts in many foods (even vegetables have very small amounts of sodium), and is used as a preservative and flavour enhancer added to many processed foods. Why it’s important to limit sodium (even if your blood pressure is normal) In fact, most North Americans consume 3400 mg sodium each day, which is double the recommended amount!īefore we get into the top contributors to sodium in the North American diet, it’s important to understand why we should limit salt in our diet. Many processed & restaurant foods already contain close to the daily limit of sodium, which means the sodium adds up quickly and can lead to exceeding the recommended limit of 2300 mg without even realizing it. This is equal to about ¼ teaspoon of table salt, and would be nearly impossible to go below with today’s diet since most people consume at least some level of processed foods. ![]() ![]() The minimum amount of sodium our body needs for normal functioning is VERY small, about 500 mg of sodium per day. And most people (especially those who are sensitive to salt and at risk of high blood pressure) should be aiming for closer to 1500 mg which is about 3/4 teaspoon of table salt. Ī common worry of some of my clients is that they won’t get enough sodium in their diet if they go on a low sodium diet. The limit for sodium is less than 2300 mg/day, which is equal to about 1 teaspoon of table salt. 9/3/2023 0 Comments Hoa switch![]() There just aren’t any negative intentions or connotations.
